Earth Shoes
My Earth Shoes keep me grounded.
I used to think them ugly, but no--
They're simple, rounded, unfettered
Light brown leather stitched to
Soft, supportive soles, which offer
Comfort for my arches and callused
Heels and balls, Grecian monkey toes.
The second one is longer than the
Big one. They say that means I am
Domineering, as does my day of birth.
I suppose the stars have in mind a
Leadership role, but I do not yet know
Where it is I should next roam.
Shall I bloom where I'm planted or
Follow where the wind blows?
I am Earth. I appear to be Air--
I have a fiery wit but the Water
Calms my spirit, sometimes into
Complacency.
In my Earth Shoes, I feel at home
Here at a table in a cafe, not far from
My address. I feel no whims to take
Flights of fancy, go downtown, or the
Airport to hop a flight to where?
Who knows.
I don't have enough money anyway.
I have three dollars and some coins I'm
Consciously collecting because of the
Year. I found a quarter from 1969 at a
Sonic in Cleveland. I have another from
1967, probably change from my pack of
Yellows.
I feel peaceful and taste the flavor of
Amaretto gelato, sweet and smooth.
It reminds me of the trip I took to
Spain when I was seventeen and I tried
A new flavor each day. My favorite?
Raspberry sorbet.
The music and the memories, the
Sight of airplanes flying to some
Destination, threaten to take me
Away again. I'm prone to drifting,
Forgetting, remembering, then
Doubting.
Was it all a dream? Maybe, but
It doesn't benefit one to think of
Life in that way, constantly
Questioning reality, caught in
Between the Then and Now,
Traipsing through Time and
Consequently losing grip of the
Current moment.
In my Earth Shoes I know where
I am. I know who I am. Put simply,
I am a part of the whole, as my old
Shoes are a part of my wardrobe,
Put in a box and forgotten for a
Time until our essential virtue is
Realized.
